Tuscarora Almanac - March 29 - 30, 1939 - The Book of First Runs

March 29-30, 1939 - The first Bluebird, 8000 ABC made a special run today on the BMT Fulton Street El for invited guests. It entered regular revenue service on March 30.

A total of six "Bluebirds" were built. The prototype, No. 8000 in 1938 and the five production units, 8001-8005 in 1940. No. 8000 has the distinction of being the last car built for the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Company while 8001-8005 were the first cars purchased by the New York City Board of Transportation after Unification. No. 8000 was built without MU capability and always operated as a single unit.

The New York, Ontario & Western Railway ceases all operations. The final train, led by FT Engine No. 805, arrives at Middletown Yard with the last of the strays and derelict cars. Except for a few short sections of track most of the rails will be ripped up and the equipment sold or scrapped.

Tuscarora Almanac – March 29, 1957 – The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of steam locomotive operation on the MONTREALER. This train ran overnight between Washington, D.C. and Montreal, Quebec over several railroads. Canadian National Railways Class U-2g, a 4-8-4 6208 made the final run out of Saint Albans.

Tuscarora Almanac - March 29, 1960 - The Book of Last Runs

Canadian Pacific Railway

The last scheduled run of a passenger train hauled by a steam locomotive on a mainline railroad in the United States occurred today. Canadian Pacific Railway train M 517, a daytime run from Vanceboro, Maine to Megantic, Quebec was headed up by a Class P1d Mikado No. 5107.

The Train of Many Colors made a special run today on the Flushing Line from 34th Street to Mets / Willets Point station to celebrate the Mets opening day. The consist was (n)
R-33 WF 9307, R-36 WF 9587-6, R-33 WF 9310, R-33 9011-0, 9206-7, R-17 6609.

Special thanks to the train crew and the New York City Transit Authority for making this trip possible.

The B33 bus route continued on. It ran from Ebbets Field down Ocean Ave and then Parkside Ave. Where it went from there I never knew and I don't know if it followed the same route as the trolley. It ran at least into the 1960s on maybe a half hour schedule and never had a "new look" bus on it. I don't ever remember seeing people actually riding it either.

I remember seeing an Old Look parked on Ocean Av just south of Flatbush Av on the 33. This was before I moved temporarily to central Illinois in July 1971. When I returned 3 years later, no sign of it.

This was the approximate location of the layover zone. Would see it while walking to Prospect Park station.
