Tuscarora Almanac - Transit Trivia Answers

Transit Trivia No. 9

Subway-Bus Transfers Points Before Chrystie Street

1) Once upon a time there were many locations in the transit system where one could make a free transfer between a bus and a subway train. During most of the 1960’s there were only three locations left where this was possible. What were they?

2) Again in the 1960’s there were two locations were a passenger needed a paper transfer to transfer between two subway lines? What were they?

Answers below:

1) Subway-Bus Transfers:

A) Rockaway Parkway - between the BMT Canarsie Line (Rts 14 & 16) and the B-42 bus.

B) Marcy Avenue-Broadway – between the BMT Broadway- Brooklyn Line (Rts 10,14,15) and the B-29 bus (to and from Kent Avenue only).

C) Jay Street-Borough Hall – between the IND Eighth Avenue Line (Rts A & E) and the B-57, B-62, B-67, B-69 and B-75 buses. The actual transfer ticket was issued to passengers paying a fare at Broadway-Nassau Street and obtaining a transfer at that time.

2) Out of System Transfers between Subway Lines.

A) Franklin Avenue-Fulton Street between the IND Fulton Street Line (Rt A) and the BMT Franklin Avenue Line (Rt 7)

B) Jay Street – between the BMT Myrtle Avenue Line (Rt 11) at Bridge-Jay Street Terminal and the IND Eighth Avenue Line (Rts A & E) at Jay Street-Borough Hall Station. This transfer had restrictions:

1) From the BMT to the IND the transfer ticket was issued at stations on the Myrtle Avenue Line from Sumner Avenue to Navy Street to passengers purchasing a token and requesting it. (At night there were on agents at these stations so the transfer tickets were issued at Bridge-Jay Streets).

2) From the IND to the BMT the transfer ticket ticket was issued to passengers paying a fare at Broadway-Nassau Street and obtaining a transfer at that time.

Wasn't the transfer in Canarsie behind a gate for easy transfer between the subway and bus?

I thought there was a free transfer at BMT Myrtle-Broadway between the M and J and the bus downstairs on Myrtle going to Downtown Brooklyn. At one time I think the subway map showed a perforated line on Myrtle where the El which was replaced by the bus.

IINM that was a transfer to the B54 bus to Jay St. that was implemented after the el was shut down.

I was right about the B57 even though it was sincerely a typo! But I did mean B67 which was also right.

I never took it.

Now I have to find a 70s subway map as a refresher.

That is correct. When the trolleys were running they boarded inside the control area. The problems started when buses replace the trolleys in 1951. Paper transfers were issued between the subway and B-42 buses. The TA discovered that many inbound bus riders would use the transfer to enter the subway platform and then exit the station and obtaining a bus transfer for a free trip back home.

Buses were then routed into the control zone with watchmen patrolling the area. At some point automatic gates were installed.

Steve: The free transfer to the B-54 bus was instituted in October 1969 when service on the myrtle Avenue El south of Broadway was discontinued. I believe that the transfer restriction to the iND at Jay Street remained in place.

I didn't know about any of those. I assume this was done to replace the trolley service over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Good stuff but the B-57 and B-62 transfers were at the High Street IND station where they terminated. They didn't go to Jay Street-Borough Hall.

That was a typo on my part. The subway to bus transfer was made at High Street, at High Street not Jay Street.

However on February 7, 1988 the transfer point for the B-67 and B-75 buses was moved to Jay Street.

As you know most of the subway to bus transfers were discontinued on January 1, 1990.
