Transit Trivia No. 9

Subway-Bus Transfers Points Before Chrystie Street

1) Once upon a time there were many locations in the transit system where one could make a free transfer between a bus and a subway train. During most of the 1960’s (before Chrystie St)there were only three locations left where this was possible. What were they?

2) Again in the 1960’s there were two locations were a passenger needed a paper transfer to transfer between two subway lines? What were they? (Before Chrystie St)

Answers tomorrow.

My grandfather took me down to 1st Avenue by the rail yards to watch them come off the barges. I remember one of the 46s derailed on a curve and they quickly got it back on the track.

3. I disagree with 3.

The third location was from the B57 to the IND at Jay Street.

Before Chrystie St., the B57 went only as far as the foot of the Manhattan Bridge.

No, I didn’t. But I did mean B67 and not B57.

As I recall, the Myrtle transfer was only if you got on the el west of Broadway and if you got on at Bway-Nassau going the other way. I remember seeing the ticket machine at Bway-Nassau at the main IND entrance. And you were only supposed to go between those stations but nobody was going to stop you.

3 was an educated guess. Most of the other free bus transfers were post Christie, to cover for el service that was removed.

After 900PM you could transfer from Myrtle to the IND at Jay St since C/R collected fares on the trains so the station agent at Bridge/Jay issued the transfers. i don’t know when the restriction went into place but in the summer of 1958 My mother and I changed at Jay St for Myrtle and had no trouble.

That was always the problem.
You were able to transfer to the 54 at Myrtle Broadway, but Not from Jay.

I didn't know that the place to get a transfer ticket was at Broadway Nassau st,not Jay.
It didn't make sense to me at the time...but once I figured it was a replacement program for the old Park Row terminal where the elevated use to terminate..
I didn't like that you couldn't get a transfer out of Jay, since the bus never went as far as the train.
