2 tracks, formerly 3, diesel train, engine in rear. I guess that means it has to be a southbound Poughkeepsie-originating train (looks like MNRR, and besides what other non-electrified line has multiple tracks?). One of the places where it's inland from the Hudson. Maybe near Cortlandt.

Don’t think so. The trains have a red stripe on the side. New Haven Line? And there’s some huge structure in the distance.

New Haven Line is 4 tracks, and electrified, all the way to New Haven. The branches are all single track, maybe little bits of two tracks, though I doubt it, never 3 tracks.

They use the coaches and locomotives interchangeably on the Danbury and Poughkeepsie lines.

My guess is the structure could be Indian Point.

Google Maps satellite view shows that there are still 3 tracks in the vicinity north and south of Indian Point.

I don't see a huge structure in the distance but there's a smokestack nearby which is likely a boiler stack which means that there is likely a hospital or college just off frame.

My guess is somewhere along the Waterbury branch, either south of Waterbury, or in the Derby-Shelton area.

There are 2 tracks just south of Poughkeepsie but I can’t find the damn smokestack on the right. Could the structure be the former Poughkeepsie rail bridge?

Hmm, my other guess was Madison on Shore Line East looking towards New Haven, but there's no wire there?

The trains have a red stripe on the side. New Haven Line?

One can't go by that. The cars with red and blue stripes are regularly intermixed.

That is correct. The Hudson Line has three tracks between Peekskill and Croton.

Jim: I wanted to say that this is the Hudson Line just south of Beacon.

The smokestack could belong to the Beacon City Incinerator.

Yeah, looks like it was probably taken from the Dennings Ave. overpass. Newburgh-Beacon Bridge in the distance. Can't really confirm because Google Street View didn't go there.

Shore Line East has catenary. Waterbury never, ever has 2 tracks with room for a third track that has been removed.

Larry, you are the winner! That smokestack is from the Beacon city incinerator long since dormant. Picture taken from the overpass that connects the riverfront park to the "mainland", just north of the Beacon Line overpass.
I figured you would get it. Over the years, the both of us must have rode under them thousands of times.

Re: Waterbury, not true boss. The Bank Street bridge in Waterbury about a mile or so south of the station has trestles for 3 tracks for a reason, which is why that was one of my first guesses.

There are always CDOT cars running on the Hudson and Harlem diesel trains.

The leading car in the Spuyten Duyvil derailment was a CDOT unit.

Heres a picture taken around the same time showing a northbound FL-9 led Montrealer with Conrail freight coming off the Beacon line waiting for traffic to provide a "gap" so it can cross over and go on to Selkirk. The overpass where I took the original picture is in the backround behind the Amtrak Train.

It is the transfer station. I still call the town dump. You do get a nice view of the trains passing by though.
