Tuscarora Almanac - December 4, 1938 - The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of service on the 6th Avenue El. The last southbound train left 155th Street at 10:06 PM with a seven car consist and many last riders. The last northbound train left Rector Street at 10:50 PM and arrived at 155th Street at 11:18 PM stopping only at 42nd Street and 53rd Street.

Service was discontinued between 59th Street - 9th Avenue and South Ferry. The following stations were closed; 8th Avenue-53rd Street, 50th Street, 42nd Street, 38th Street, 33rd Street, 28th Street, 23rd Street, 18th Street, 14th Street, 8th Street, Bleecker Street, Grand Street, Franklin Street, Chambers Street, Park Place, Cortlandt Street and Rector Street. The stations at Battery Place and South Ferry which are actually on the 9th Avenue El will continue to be served by those trains.

The city awarded the demolition contract to George T. Weisbaum, from California. On Dec 18th, one day after preliminary stripping, the contract was revoked because he failed to post a performance bond. The runner-up, Harris Structural Steel, of South Plainfield, NJ, assumed the contract. Harris had a NYC office on 4th Ave. Equipment and track stripping was done between Jan 3rd, 1939 and Jan 12th, 1939. Structural demolition began at West 3rd St on Jan 13th and finished at 32nd St, on April 14th, 1939.
Harris Structural Steel remains in business today.

Also on this date, December 4th, 1991, Pan American World Airways ceased all operations, putting to an end 64 years of existence, putting hundreds (including me) out of work and leaving behind a legacy of many industry firsts that shaped commercial aviation as we know it today.

The last Pan Am flight was served by B727-200 N368PA under the radio callsign Clipper 436 from Barbados to Miami.

The last flying B747-121, registered at Pan Am as N744PA and used by General Electric as a flying test stand as N747GE, was retired only last month.

The State of Vermont begins a commuter rail service between Burlington and Shelburne. The service is dubbed “The Champlain Flyer.

This service was discontinued on February 28, 2003.

It still puzzles me why anyone thought the Champlain Flyer would work. There's just not enough people in the region.

There's just not enough people in the region

It was conceived as an alternative to construction on RT 7. Considering in was only thirteen miles in length and only ran two trains a day I don't see how it could have worked. It's not like RT 7 was the only road in town .

My grandfather took two photos of the el at W. 44th St., one looking north and one looking south, during his 1936 visit to the US.

William: Thank you for this nice collection of photographs. I do have a question though. In the top photo there appears to be some kind of bar extending across the el between two buildings. What is that?

That's a relocated gas main while they were building the Sixth Av subway. Here's a photo from nycsubway.org of a somewhat similar relocated gas main during construction of the West Side IRT:
