CHRYSTIE STREET MINUS 4

This is Wednesday, November 22, 1967, one day before Thanksgiving and four days before the opening of the Chrystie Street Subway.

Today will be the last day of operation the original “QB Broadway-Brighton Local via Bridge.” (BMT Route # 1 Brighton). The “QB” ran during weekday evenings and midnight hours and at all times on the weekends. It operated between Ditmars Boulevard,

Astoria and Coney Island via the north side of the Manhattan Bridge making local stops. The last train probably operated sometime around 6 AM on Wednesday morning. For the next four days the “QT Broadway-Brighton Local via Tunnel” would run full time.

Today will also be the last day of service between the BMT Southern Section and the Nassau Street Line via the south side of the Manhattan Bridge. Although the Fourth Avenue-Nassau Street trains (M/S)(BMT Route #2 4th Avenue) would operate for one more day on Friday, November 24 they will run via the tunnel on that day.

On the Friday after Thanksgiving did they run a full schedule? Or did all trains just run through the tunnel? I remember the QT running all weekend from Thanksgiving day but didn't see the rest. I rode the D on that Sunday, and on Monday all hell broke loose. All those years of planning and all of those brochures and both employees and passengers were completely flummoxed by it all.

Zac: They did run mostly a full schedule that day. The "QT" ran all day Thanksgiving Day right through Saturday. The 4th Avenue Nassau Street Express ran as well but it did run via the tunnel so the Nassau St-Southern Division schedule was somewhat reduced.

I rode the last Broadway train over the Manny B (NS).

While the signal system played a part, the root cause of the Richmond Hill wreck was the brakeman's incorrect belief that the disabled train was about to get underway. He decided not to place a signal torpedo on the tracks as he thought it would be unnecessary.

What I meant is it came right back to the same Subchat post and not to the YouTube video.

The Montague St. tunnel was taxed to the max those four days.

And lest we forget, on this date in 1963, JFK was assassinated. Those of us who are old enough to remember that event, as I am, can recall exactly where they were when they heard the fateful news.

Thank You. I was hoping someone else would mention that. Without starting a huge OT rant, I would just say that we were cheated of several leaders in those years.

Were all the timers in the Manhattan-bound tube in place back then? Unlike most river tubes, where there is a timer or two on the downgrade and then the signals all clear, the inbound Montague tube is timed all the way through until past the interlocking split between Broadway and Nassau St.

Mr. Lichtman's 10th period sophomore English class, sitting in the first row, third seat, when Forest Hills High School principal Dr. Leo Ryan made the announcement on the PA system around 3:30. The school was immediately dismissed (we normally got out at 5:00).

I was in first grade, having just turned seven. They played Frank McGee's xoundbyte over the PA that President Kennedy was dead. This was a Catholic grade school; our nun clasped her hands in prayer and muttered, "Dear, dear."
