One key moment in CTA's history was forgotten in this video: their 1952 acquisition of the lines of the Chicago Motor Coach Company (which was a sister to our own Fifth Avenue Coach and New York City Omnibus - all of which were owned by Omnibus Corp. of Chicago). This prefigured by two years Omnibus' unloading of both FACCo and NYCO - and the latter purchasing the former. |

There was also the Rehabilitation Act. That’s why systems built before 1990 like WMATA and BART were accessible ab initio.I think that the NYCTA/MABSTOA first got accessible buses with the RTS in 1981. Not sure, though. |

(Don't know as I never rode them in NYC)SCRTD started out in 1978 with the crappy AM Generals. Those lifts rarely worked and they were officially de-classified as accessible in the mid-80s. Same thing with their 1980 Grummans. First more-or-less reliable SCRTD accessibles were the 1981 RTS-04 (in service 12/9/80), and everything thereafter. |

I’m sure you’re right about the ‘81 RTS. That’s why I’m surprised it took them 9 more years to have one. I never gave it a thought until I watched the video so maybe it’s not too surprising after all. |

Like I said elsewhere the NYCTA had them be going in 1981. By 1990 a good deal of the fleet had them. At least a batch came in almost every year beginning in ‘81. |

The same RTS the MTA decided to purchase, because of the modified rear end cap.The MTA told GMC that they would purchase the model if they made modifications to the air-conditioning units. The RTS 04 were okay, but the 06 was much better. It's a shame that the 08 WFD were never purchased by either systems like CTA did.. |

Like many CTA buses their RTS also were a bit unique. They were designated the 08 series which were 96 inches wide, and the major difference being wider front entrance (flat flatter face). I think it was because CTA wanted the wheelchair lift in the front door. The option/model later became known as the RTS WFD. |
