PHOTOS; Ten Years Ago (Sort of) |

Posted by kp5308 on Mon Jul 4 17:04:19 2022 Bob Vogel, Ken Schwartz & I attended the Heritage Unit event at the former Southern Railway's Spencer Shop site, now The North Carolina Transportation Museum. The temperature was an even 100 degrees but attendance was still strong. This was the distance champ for Informal Railfan Events that members of the West Jersey Chapter NRHS planned in the 10 odd years of the IRE format. We actually bought our tickets by phone on the way to the show! We got there on the 2nd, spent the 3rd at the Museum, railfanned the area on the 4th and returned on the 5th. We started on the 2nd with a stop at the Auto Train facility off I-95 in Virginny. This was our first Heritage Unit image:That evening a presentation describing the Heritage Fleet concept complete with a good old Southern Bar-B-Q was held at the restored Spencer station: Followed by a several hours late eastbound Carolinian making the Spencer stop in darkness. Good enough for some tripod frames: On the 3rd we didn't get to the Museum for opening ceremonies but we managed to weasel a spot right next to the Norfolk & Western GE for the Turntable Photo session. All the engines were moved from their spots in front of the roundhouse one at a time & spun on the turntable: After that some were posed with pieces of the Museum's collection for a "then & now" show: While some others were paraded through the property: The "Queen Bee": Amtrak sent their "Bloody Nose" P42 and also their last Heritage full dome: Night shots after dinner wrapped up the day: The 4th was spent on a 3 man tour of the surrounding railroad scene. First was Aberdeen, Carolina and Western: at Star: The Perdue facility at Candor: Then Aberdeen for the Aberdeen and Rockfish at Aberdeen: A&R corporate HQ: We then spent an hour or 2 at Hamlet, a major CSX hub. Very busy for the 4th: The only preserved EMD SDP35 at the Hamlet station, now a museum: Bennettsville SC for a Pee Dee GP16 in a poor spot for photographs: The only locomotives on the Laurinburg & Southern were this critter and a boarded up SW1500 at Laurinburg NC: A chance encounter at the town of Old Hundred: Finishing up the 4th with these 2 at the other end of Hamlet Yard. After this stop it is dinner time, then a shower then bed: We planned our departure on the 5th around the Piedmont Service morning arrival from Charlotte. These trains now run push/pull with a "cabbage" control cab at the other end. Homer & I would ride this service to the Streamliner event at Spencer in 2014.: We were back in Jersey by 7PM tired but REAL happy we went :) |

NS 8099 which is pictured in this post was wrecked in Pittsburgh last December when it was caught in a rock slide and overturned. I don't know if it was scrapped or is awaiting repair in Altoona. |

No sightings of 8099 in the NS Altoona shop/dead line or outside the Juniata locomotive shop. I did notice the wrecked SD33ECO #6220 and several 4700 series GP33ECOs in the dead line. Anybody out there know the story? |
