Fireworks and the Manny B

Posted by Dyre Dan on Tue Jul 5 06:10:38 2022

If the fireworks last night were over the East River, why were they not visible from trains crossing the Manhattan Bridge? I and a companion were on a Q train last night at about 9:35 PM, crossing the East River from Manhattan to Brooklyn, and I thought we would see the fireworks from the train, but we saw nada. At Atlantic, we went over to the D platform and took a D back to Manhattan, but again saw nothing over the river, although some fireworks could be seen in the sky over Manhattan, largely hidden by buildings.

Take a look at a map of Manhattan. The fireworks were between 23rd and 50th streets (very roughly). The East River runs roughly north-south there.

At the MB, the East River runs east-west. So if you look up the East River from the MB, you are looking in the wrong direction (east, not north). You have to look north, over Manhattan. Quite likely, numerous buildings taller than the bridge deck block your view. You needed to be on the WB.

Thanks. I guess I'll try looking from the J train in 2024. I didn't realize the fireworks were only north of 23rd St. In some previous years, I don't think that was the case.

They haven't been by the Brooklyn Bridge in a few years. There is a bend in the river just south of Williamsburg Bridge by the Brooklyn Navy Yard that prevents you from seeing North to where the fireworks were this year.
