PHOTOS; The End

After at least 2 "farewell" runs the LAST Silverliner II (ex-Reading #9010) and SLIII (Ex-Penn Central 235) cars ran on the Cynwyd line on this date in 2012. IIRC we ended up riding free of charge. Nice touch. Personally I can't believe ten years have got behind me! When I found out I took the afternoon off and rode PATCO from Ashland into Philly to join what I thought was going to be a big crowd. Normally a 1 car move, SEPTA laid on an extra car for a crowd that didn't show. Some images from that afternoon:

An ownership fight about who owned the land that the new ROW will occupy will delay this project till roughly 2014:

The SLII is my all time favorite MU car. I couldn't get enough of those as built outside disc brakes and racetrack oval windows when I was a kid. The 9010 leads us onto single track:

The fans were out to record our passing. I think this platform is Bala:

SEPTA is holding Reading Company #9001 on their property for eventual preservation at the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum in Hamburg PA. Negotiations on the move (particularly with Norfolk Southern) are an ongoing affair. AFAIK all the others are cut up:

Still have the tickets from that day:

Nice! When I moved there in Aug 65 the IIs were new, and I was impressed. Of course the actual commutes paled in comparison to the IC Electric which was my baseline experience, but they had A/C.

I know you mean "air conditioning"; but they do in fact have AC, in contrast to the IC Electric's DC. :-)

I rode these cars twice....uncomfortable and rough riding...but this was in 2008 when they were on borrowed time.

They preserving 9001 with the propulsion intact (I’m guessing no, because PCBs, but I don’t recall seeing stickers on the transformers like the m-2s had)

I’m guessing no, because PCBs,

The only PCBs on that car are trace amounts in the floor system. I do not know how complete the car is but it has to be pretty close. I do know that the brakes are (or were) fully functional with all new shoes and all new wheels. We are considering our options on how to best use the car to our advantage but it has to get here first!
