Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Wed May 18 09:34:02 2022 Tuscarora Almanac – May 18, 1947 – The Book of Last Runs Manhattan, New York Third Avenue Railway Company This is the last day of operation for the Third Avenue – Amsterdam Avenue trolley line. Cars were assigned to both the 65th Street and Harlem Car Barns and carried a large letter “T” on the front dash sign. Streetcars will be replaced by the M-101 bus line. It is also the last day for streetcar service at the 65th Street Car Barn. The barn was home to only one route, the Third Avenue-Amsterdam Avenue trolley. The barn was located east of Third Avenue between East 66th Street and East 65th Street. Source: New York Division Bulletins / February 1964 & December 2000 / articles by Mr. Bernard Linder Tuscarora Almanac - May 18, 1973 - The Book of Wrecks Manhattan, New York New York City Transit Authority IRT Division A northbound #5 Lexington Av Express derailed south of Grand Central-42 Street Station about 10 PM. The first eight cars of the ten car train derailed. The consist was (n) 6239, 7912-7771, 7093, 6633, 7733, 5822, 6598, 7071and 7260 (s). Car 6239 sideswiped the wall and car 7771 hit the northbound local rail. The 65th Street car barn site became the luxury apartment building, Manhattan House.The M-101 bus continues to operate today on its original route, with two exceptions: it doesn't go south of 6th Street; and it has operated southbound on Lexington Ave. since 1960 when Third and Lexington became a one way pair. |

While on that same 1960 day, a "short-run" M-101 was put into service between 125th and 23rd Streets which was basically a reconstituted version of the old NYCO #3 Lexington Avenue line. |

That factoid is mentioned in my own book, From a Nickel to a Token. The introduction of FACO/Surface Transit joint service on Lexington and Third Avenues created a wildcat labor dispute in the month (June 1960) prior to the introduction of the revised one-way routes (July 17, 1960). Remember it well. Means I'm now a senior citizen! |

Also, interesting to see an R-15 as a lead motor in 1973 (I was living in Illinois then, but I didn't see any in the lead when I spent the summer with my grandmother in Brooklyn). |

Also the 7912-7771 pair of R28 cars must have been repaired since no R26 or R28 car was retired due to wreck damage. When they went through GOH they were reunited with their original mates and the H2CA couplers were replaced with drawbars to make them the equivalent of the later R29 and R33 cars. |
