Off Topic: Ferry for Sale

Posted by Bill from Maspeth on Sun Jan 16 13:02:28 2022

According to a story I saw on NY1 this morning.....

.....You can buy the retired (last summer) Staten Island Ferry John F. Kennedy for an opening bid of $250,000. But hurry, your bid has to be in by this Wednesday (19th). The winning bidder is responsible to remove it from the ferry slip on SI.

Some months ago I heard that the JFK has a blown engine which DOT did not wish to repair. It would have been nice for it to run on a farewell trip.....on second thought maybe that wasn't such a good idea.

I am sorry to hear about the engine. I last rode the KENNEDY in June 2021. She retires now with the house record for longevity. She has been in service for 57 years. (I have no doubt that someone on this board will dispute this).

Thank you for posting this.

Many riders liked the ability to walk around outside on the JFK, a feature that has been brought back on the 3 newest ferries that are being readied for service.

Thanks Bill.

Click the link on the article where is says about nobody was trained as of October. Yet DOT promised the ferry would be in service by the end of the year.

Maybe he's talking about this year. LOL.

As long as she does not share the fate of the BINGHAMPTON ferryboat that sank in Edgewater, NJ. I wonder what happens of nobody submits a $125,000 minimum bid, or any bid at all?

There already are some bids so that is a nonissue.

That said, considering the track record of large old ferries, the Binghamton's fate isn't an outlier.

Mike: The BINGHAMPTON did have a long and happy retirement as a restaurant in Edgewater, NJ. The problem with any ship in salt water subject to tides is that eventually without maintenance she will sink. Sooner or later the salt eats away at the hull. Also her in the northeast vessels have to deal with period freezing and thawing. These ships need to be periodically dry-docked for hull painting and general repairs.

Once a ship is moored river silt begins to pile up around the hull. This make removing the vessel that much more difficult. Look at the problem that they had when they attempted to drydock the INTREPID back in 2008.

Also the owners of the vessels may simply not have the monies to pay for the maintenance or dry-docking. This is a problem that many naval museums are dealing with.

The KENNEDY is already 58 years old and she is a large vessel. (most boats are). I don’t know what practical use could be found for her.

And anchor it off Governor's Island for safety and Security from the crime wave in NYC!

Perhaps a consortium of Chinese or other Asian restaurants could do it!

NEW YORK (AP) — “Saturday Night Live” comics Colin Jost and Pete Davidson have purchased a decommissioned Staten Island Ferry boat for $280,100 with plans to turn it into New York’s hottest club.

Jost and Davidson teamed up with comedy club owner Paul Italia on Wednesday’s winning bid for the John F. Kennedy, a 277-foot (84-meter) vessel that shuttled commuters between the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Staten Island from 1965 until it was taken out of service last August.

“The Staten Island Ferry is definitely something iconic,” Italia, a real estate investor and co-owner of the restaurant and comedy club The Stand, said Friday. “We wanted to figure out a way to save it and to do something special with it.”

Bill: The MISS NEW YORK was tied up at Bridgeport for a few years and was visible from the train station. Later she was moored in Edgewater NJ near the BINGHAMPTON. I do not know what became of her.

I have taken the Port Jeff ferry out of Bridgeport several times have not seen her.
