Mike: The BINGHAMPTON did have a long and happy retirement as a restaurant in Edgewater, NJ. The problem with any ship in salt water subject to tides is that eventually without maintenance she will sink. Sooner or later the salt eats away at the hull. Also her in the northeast vessels have to deal with period freezing and thawing. These ships need to be periodically dry-docked for hull painting and general repairs. Once a ship is moored river silt begins to pile up around the hull. This make removing the vessel that much more difficult. Look at the problem that they had when they attempted to drydock the INTREPID back in 2008. Also the owners of the vessels may simply not have the monies to pay for the maintenance or dry-docking. This is a problem that many naval museums are dealing with. The KENNEDY is already 58 years old and she is a large vessel. (most boats are). I don’t know what practical use could be found for her.
