Yep. I believe they were referred to as Grumman Flxibles

I frequently rode on the slant porches on the E & F. Never failed to get stuck under the river. Cooler and you could sneak a cigarette or 2.

When I had to take the subway to Manhattan to work in the 80s, if I was going over the Manny B in a 40 slant, you would see all the smokers go out between the cars to smoke while crossing the bridge.

If there were money to be spent, the front bulkhead could be restored to almost original appearance by utilizing LEDs with the same fonts as the original signs and for the markers and EXP/LOCAL signs as well.

I thought years ago they would have acid etched the side and end doors and apply the blues. Maybe a racoon mask on the R42 as well.

That would be so nice to see that again without having to look at older pictures.

That being said thank God we have those pix and those who went out & photographed these beauties.

That’s why they should keep a complete 10 car train of them.

Yeah it would be a good idea to keep them around.

Are you thinking for service?

I guess one reason the R-32 lasted longer was because of problems with the R-179. There was a need to keep R-32's around in case an entire class/fleet of tech trains had to go out-of-service.

Service in terms of as a runabout or shuttle.
Their status places them above all other car classes retired so far in the 21st century that they deserve to keep an entire train of them around in my opinion.

Look at the IND old timers. Now there are nine of them that are operable. If you've seen any of the test train clips from November, 103 is in the mix.

And those guys were on the road back in the early 70s after being spiffed and polished and having their numbers duplicated by R-44s, right?

IIRC, R-44s took over the R-1 numbers, R-46 took over R-4 and R-6, then the R-62s and first few R-62As finished the job (although 1626-1650 are not currently in use, R-62 ends at 1625, R-62A starts at 1651)

This is all roughly, didn't feel like looking up the actual Arnine numbers on nycsubway.org.

I got you. What I’m talking about is just keeping a set of them intact as a complete R-32 museum train that could be used in an emergency.

I believe I have a complete set of side route and destination signs. I'm very leery of loaning them out knowing things have been going missing for years.
