Tuscarora Almanac for December 7

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Tue Dec 7 04:05:18 2021

Tuscarora Almanac – December 7, 1962 – The Book of Wrecks

New York City Transit Authority
IND Division
Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corporation

During the early morning hours of December 7, 1962 a water-main located at 18th Street and Sixth Avenue ruptured and flooded the tracks of the Sixth Avenue Lines of both the IND Division and PATH. Subway service was suspended between 34th Street-Herald Square and West 4 Street. PATH service was suspended between 33rd Street and Hoboken.

The following emergency services were placed into effect.

Routes A, E, GG and HH operated normally.

Route AA 8th Avenue Local would continue to operate between 168th Street – Broadway and Hudson Terminal (today’s World Trade Center), but would run only during the rush hours.

Route BB 6th Avenue Local continued to operate between 168th Street – Broadway and 34th Street – 6th Avenue but would operate during non-rush hours only.

Route C 8th Avenue Express would operate between Bedford Park Boulevard and 34th Street – 6th Avenue during rush hours and running express on the Grand Concourse Line in the direction of traffic and in both directions on the Eighth Avenue Line between 145th Street and 59th Street.

Route CC 8th Avenue Local was suspended.

Route D 6th Avenue Express continued to operate between 205th Street and Coney Island (Via the Rutgers Street Tunnel) but would operate during non-rush hours only running via the local tracks of the Eighth Avenue Line between 59th Street and West 4th Street. This service would operate express between 145th Street and 59th Street.

Route DD 6th Avenue Local would operate between 205th Street and Coney Island (Via the Rutgers Street Tunnel) during rush hours only running via the local tracks of the Eighth Avenue Line between 59th Street and West 4th Street.

Route F 6th Avenue Express operated between 179th Street – Jamaica and 34th Street – 6th Avenue (Via the 53 Street Tunnel) at all times.

It was the first time that the C had operated since 1949 and the first and only time that the DD ever ran. It was a very nice early Christmas present for rail-fans of the day.

Normal service was restored on December 24, 1962.

Tuscarora Almanac - December 7, 2011 - The Book of First Runs

Hoboken, New Jersey
New York Waterways

Ferry Service returns to the Hoboken Railroad Terminal for the first time since 1967. Motor Vessels of New York Waterways will now operate from Slips 1 through 5 to the World Financial Center and Wall Street. That 1962 incident no doubt also complicated the building of the express tracks between 34th and West 4th that would finally activate in 1967-68, no?

I don't think so. It was just a watermain break.

So this is the day when the ferries returned to the actual Hoboken Terminal and abandoned the makeshift ferry slips they were using?

My IND sign box is signed as a DD for the occasion.

They should have run the D to 34th St. and the C down 8th Ave. to Coney Island. It could have switched over either before Jay St. if it had run express down 8th Ave. or over to Houston St. had it run local south of 59th.

No, what really happened was the then under construction 6th Av express tunnel collapsed, causing (or being caused by) the water main break. That's why it took so long to make the repairs. They were very lucky. City Water Tunnel #1 runs under the express tunnel, but it was unaffected.

The listing always confused me too until I did this:

Rush Hour:
Routes A, E, GG and HH operated normally.

Route AA 8th Avenue Local would continue to operate between 168th Street – Broadway and Hudson Terminal (today’s World Trade Center), but would run only during the rush hours.

Route C 8th Avenue Express would operate between Bedford Park Boulevard and 34th Street – 6th Avenue during rush hours and running express on the Grand Concourse Line in the direction of traffic and in both directions on the Eighth Avenue Line between 145th Street and 59th Street.

Non-Rush:
Routes A, E, GG and HH operated normally.

Route BB 6th Avenue Local continued to operate between 168th Street – Broadway and 34th Street – 6th Avenue but would operate during non-rush hours only.

Route F 6th Avenue Express operated between 179th Street – Jamaica and 34th Street – 6th Avenue (Via the 53 Street Tunnel) at all times.

Thank you, as always! I remember fooling around with the route signs on Arnines in the museum when I was about 10 years old. I saw the DD and FF routes- I thought maybe they had once been regular routes.

The FF never ran labeled as such, but the V train would have been the FF is double letters had been retained.

That’s the way I remember it. The news media stated that the problem was the result of construction of the 6th Av exp tks.

In effect that is exactly what was done. The trains were just badly mislabeled.

I think it's safe to assume the DD made all local stops. It was a CC/D switcheroo.
