[PHOTO] Station Identification Needed (R-42)

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Mon Dec 6 10:21:16 2021

Back in Sept 1978, I shot this closeup of a repainted R-42 on the West End Line.
I never documented what station I took this shot so maybe someone could solve this mystery.
The buildings are clue to a lessor extent, but the signal bearing the chaining number D2 670 just might solve the mystery.

It's 20th Avenue. You were standing at the west (RR north) end of the southbound platform with the camera angled toward 18th Ave and the middle and northbound tracks, very roughly the perspective of this video (which is not my video) at 1:47.

I was going to question the date of your photo, because I thought that by 1978 the pantograph gates had already been installed on the R40s and R42s, but I see that's not correct. By May, 1977 some (or all) of the slants had received them, by February, 1978 some of the R42s received the new front sign curtains with the modern, smaller bullets, by August 1979 some of the R42s had received the pantographs:

May, 1977:

February, 1978:

August, 1979:

I remembered my 666 signals for some reason. Northbound ind Local Nostrand and west end at Fort Hamilton. I don't remember if Jamaica BMT had one
