PHOTOS: Saturday Morning |

Posted by kp5308 on Tue Nov 23 21:47:08 2021 I was told on Friday that Reading and Northern would be using 2 of the recently acquired Iowa Pacific heavyweight coaches on the Pottsville Express Yuengling Brewery tour trip due to RDC3 #9166 having issues. The remaining 2 RDC1s would be making the Jim Thorpe trip and a GP38-2 was set to handle the Express. A last minuet schedule change gave me time to do some photography: The ex-Illinois Central monitor roof coach (renumbered 450) has a generator that also powered the arch roof ex-Southern car (#451) so a generator car would not be necessary. Both cars had the roofs inspected and repainted the previous week: Except for a cleaning these cars were purchased at auction in the condition seen here. The 450 has working air conditioning and 66 MARC seats: Because of larger restrooms #451 has only 46 seats. The car has windows that open due to no AC: GP38-2 #2012 could not be started so an SD50/GP39RN will substitute for the substitute: I intend on shooting the RDC departure from the other end of the yard so after one more image I gotta get going 'cuz it is pretty close to the 9AM departure time: Surprisingly only one fan is waiting when I arrive. Here they come: And there they go, passing under Tuckerton Rd: I decide to drive the 30 or so miles to Schuylkill Haven to shoot the Pottsville train from the remains of the empty hopper storage yard north of town. Soon after I pick my spot the SD50 shows up, sailing by the amber waves of weeds at about 40MPH: The Project 113 Santa trips will pass this way on December 11th & 12th. The line to the Minersvile and Tremont lines branches off the original Philadelphia and Reading Main Line route to Pottsville at this point: Across from the Schuylkill Haven station sits ex-Southern open air car Lookout Mountain, now RBMN #20. Behind it is another ex-Southern heavyweight 46 seat coach renumbered 453: Close by sat the ex-New York Central diner #448, presently RBMN #1166: On the way home I found RBMN observation-lounge #7 Mardi Gras sitting at the wheel shop in Port Clinton complete with IC lettering and City of New Orleans tailsign: Also at PC sat the lame RDC3 and the A-B F unit set: Plus SD50-2 #5018 and freshly painted and completely lettered green and yellow #3059, the only ex-Norfolk Southern SD40-2 on the RBMN equipped with the enhanced "Admiral Cab": I guess the Reading colors have returned! |
