And on this date in 1969, all of New York - not just riders on the 7 - went absolutely bananas as the Mets overcame 100:1 odds and wrapped up the World Series. I remember it as though it were yesterday; I got home from school just in time to see the last out, then watched the clubhouse celebration. |

I'm rather surprised that the Tottenville-Perth Amboy ferries lasted for decades after the Outerbridge opened. Bay Ridge-Staten Island ferry service got the kibosh almost as soon as the Verrazano opened. |

I'm rather surprised that the Tottenville-Perth Amboy ferries lasted for decades after the Outerbridge opened. Bay Ridge-Staten Island ferry service got the kibosh almost as soon as the Verrazano opened. Sunrise Ferries which took over the operation used small boats some of which could be operated by one man. One of these boats, the JUNIPER became an excursion boat on Lake Champlain. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

I wasn't at Shea Stadium, but I conveniently developed a sore throat on Monday night (the day before Game 3). So got to watch Game 3 and Game 4. I actually felt well enough to go to school on Thursday, but no way was I missing Game 5, so when my mother asked me how I was feeling on Wednesday night, I said "well, better give it one more day". So I got to see the glorious Game 5, and returned to school on Friday feeling 100% 🙂 (It helped that my grandmother was able to come over and stay with me during the day. She watched the games as well, as she attended quite a few Brooklyn Dodger games back in the day (ironically, I lived a couple of blocks away from where Ebbetts Field was, of course by then, the huge-ass apartment houses occupied the site. My school (I. S. 320) was across McKeever Pl from Ebbetts, I guess where the parking lot was for the stadium))1969 was a great year -- Mets win the World Series -- Man lands on the moon -- Got to ride an air-conditioned subway car (R-42 on the D) for the first time |

New R-42 cars started displacing old R1-R4 cars which were scrapped, the last Lo-V Steinway cars were retired, the last of the BMT Standards made their last run, and the Q cars left the scene as did the Myrtle Ave. elevated line they ran on after they returned to the BMT in the late 1950s replacing the gate cars. |

My great 1969 year besides the Mets victory and the moon landing was being able to operate the last train of BMT steels on the 14 St Line and the Qs on Myrtle for most of that summer (in addition to the first of the R-40Ms and 42s) and being able to do my side job as a musician 5 nights a week. |

I always thought that "kill" is the Dutch word for creek - so the correct name is just the Arthur Kill.subfan |

The R1's actually were loaned to the BMT before the 1949 service changes. I have seen pictures of at least one train of R1 cars on the BMT side of the station that was later abandoned after the BMT trains were through routed to Astoria using the former Second Avenue Elevated platforms on the IRT side. |
