Take The Pelham 123

Posted by BusRider on Tue Oct 19 09:23:12 2021

Just recently seen the original movie. Were all these scenes the actual areas? Great movie though!

No.

A lot of the film was shot in the Court Street (H) station (today's NY Transit Museum) or in the tunnels around there.

The only places where that couldn't work was in areas around Park Avenue South on the street (28th St., and when Garber met DCI Daniels in the car) and on the 14th Street and 23rd Street platforms.

Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the information I've been able to gleam, and from personal observation after seeing the movie 100 million times since I got my first DVD copy in around 2001 or so.

Ah, thanks. Out of the many movies I’ve seen, it seemed this one was the most realistic which is why I asked. Even the model board, compared to the remake.

Astor Place, Bleecker St., Spring St. and Canal St. are all the real deal. So are 23rd St. and Union Square. "28th St." and "51st St." were done probably at either Hoyt-Schermerhorn with a fake wall or Court St. The tipoff there is that station signs hanging from the ceiling are parallel to the tracks. "Grand Central" was shot at Court St.

You can tell one of the scenes was filmed at Court St. When the train enters the station (I forget which one) you can see an R-10 across the platform.

Are you sure it's not an R-12 or 14?

Specifically, in the film, you'll see the, "51st Street" sign perpendicular to the track. BUZZ!!!

The number is 2973, which makes it a Thunderbird. That's the scene where Mr. Mattson leaves the train and bumps into Mr. Brown. "What's the rush, chief? Ain't gonna leave without ya!"

The radio car accident scene, as the cops rush the money up to 28th Street, was done on Lafayette St. Also, the scene where Garber, Daniels, and the uniform split up to search the emergency exits was filmed around Union Square Park.

It amazes me how the scenery has significantly changed, when the infrastructure and type of area that NYC is, a complete makeover can be a challenge.
