PHOTOS; Trip From Jim Thorpe

After turning the entire train on the Nesquehoning Wye the North Reading Special backs past the Jim Thorpe station to wait its turn to load:

The Gorge Train arrives around 2:45 to discharge riders:

Two GP38-2s are in command including Admiral Cab equipped #2013. The ex-Southern EMD was built with a high short hood in 1973 and bought by the RBMN last year:

The RDC set will leave immediately after the 3PM Gorge train. The "Last Train to Pottsville" will board here instead of at the station platform:

All 3 open air cars are running Gorge service due to the big crowds. One of the locals remarked to me how packed the town seems:

By the time the F units approach the station a light rain is starting to fall. Heavy rain was predicted so I'd say we skated weather-wise:

We are scheduled to leave at 3:30 so around 10 minnits after 3 we begin boarding:

The rain picks up almost immediately after we pull out, making photography almost impossible. I wait till we drop off the Port Clinton gang to shoot some of the consist. That signal bridge is a transplant from the Reading's Perkiomen Junction trackage near Valley Forge:

Number 8 is the first of the 11 recently acquired San Luis and Rio Grande cars to be repainted. The car was built by Pullman in 1918 as an Illinois Central 88 seat coach. In 1951 IC rebuilt several of these coaches to economically upgrade some of the City of New Orleans equipment. Coach #2211 was converted into a blunt end club/lounge/observation car and given the name Calumet Club along with the new number 3308. Notice that the 6 wheel trucks were retained. They would later be replaced with a type similar to the P/S Milwaukee Road Super Dome trucks. This is the first trip for the new owner as Mauch Chunk Club:

Another former SLRG first timer is one of the ex-Southern heavyweight coaches. Pullman built this 60 seat car in 1926 as #1668 and SR refurbished and upgraded it for service on their excursion trains in the 70s:
