Latest NYC Subway Map

Posted by George Foelschow on Sat Sep 18 20:22:00 2021

I am vacationing in New York City from the Left Coast in October, landing at Newark Airport and taking Amtrak or New Jersey Transit to Penn Station in New York and staying at a hotel in the 5th Avenue and W 45th Street area. What is the best place to find the latest NYC subway map and Manhattan bus map?

George: I was able to get a subway map recently at 2 Broadway.
They have a customer service center around the corner on Stone Street.

I agree, though it seems that there are still map-collectors out there, despite the increased rigor involved in the hobby!

I used to use the fare media (farecard, ticket, etc.) from places around the world I've visited as a souvenir for having traveled there. Now even that may no longer be possible, as more and more I have to go out of my way to try to get just one physical card/ticket for the collection. Printed screenshots of my phone on cardstock may soon become my alternate.

Larry,

Has Stone St been reopened in general or is an appointment still needed just to get inside?

It was open to the public when I was there back in August. They will take your temperature when you enter the building. The maps were not on display. I had to request one from the supervisor.

As someone else mentioned the best place to get the latest maps - Subway and bus is from the MTA website: new.mta.info

From the menu on that page select maps and download the pdf files to your smart device (phone, Ipad etc).

I did a "survey" of several station booths today and found that some had copies of the May 2019 subway map, some had copies of the the February 2020 subway and one (Pelham Bay Park) still had copies of the September 2018 subway map. You'll neveer know what station booth has which edition of the Subway Map.

All things considered there have not been many changes over the past few years. There have been a few updates to ADA compliant (wheelchair accessible) stations and the the latest online map shows that the 42nd St shuttle is now wheelchair accessible and also indicates the connection between the B, D, F, M station at 42nd St-Bryant Park to the Times Square station complex.

I got lucky and picked up a few copies of the special map that was put out when the 2nd Ave. line opened. They still had some at the 86th St. station in October 2017.
