ONE (1) PHOTO - BMT Bluebird Interior With Fans

Any explanation as to why this BMT Bluebird received these indoor fans, almost in the same concept of the Multi's, R-10/12/14's and later the Q's? I have seen a color image of this same set-up in one of the New York City Subway Calendars published by Newkirk Images.

Perhaps, the first ordered unit, #8000, had them?

Were car interiors really that dark?

Nah, same lighting as a PCC streetcar. That pic didn't compensate for the bright lights so the rest looks dark.

Doesn't look like those two small fans could do much good.

They were there to provide atmosphere, like the slowly rotating ceiling fans in cigarette-smoke filled rooms in old time detective movies.
