It almost takes longer to say the name than one spends travelling it (at least on a Sunday morning when it isn't clogged with traffic), so one could be forgiven for not knowing its official name.

That's for sure. Look how much it cost to build and how long it took to open the Second Avenue Subway which for now only consists of three stations. There are also several unfinished tunnel sections which may or may not ever get tracks installed and trains running through them.

on page 168 0f stan fishlers book :the subways: it shows the tunnels after a train of low-v`s took out a bumper block at end of track.

...which reminds me of an incident at the stub terminal at Chicago's O'Hare Airport Terminal station of the Blue Line. The operator apparently fell asleep on the owl run and the train crashed through the end-of-line device and tried to climb the ascending passenger escalator. Needless to say, she was "terminated" by the CTA.
