The NYCTA held its fourth annual “Parade of Vintage Trains” over the weekend of June 16-17. Three vintage trains ran on the express tracks of the Brighton Line between Kings Highway (Track A4) and Brighton Beach (Track A3). All passengers boarded at Brighton Beach as the doors did not open at Kings Highway.

The three trains consisted of one “B” Type (n) 2390-2391-2392, one “BU” Type (n) 1404-1273-1407 and The Trains of Many Metals: (n) R-16 6387, R-40 4280-1, R-38 4029-4028 and R-10 3184. A four train of “D” Types was scheduled but 6112 was not able to leave the yard. Sister 6095 was stationed at the south end of track A4 at Brighton Beach as a static display.

The rail fan community was well represented by ageless Tunnelrat.

The rail fan community was well represented by ageless Tunnelrat.

And I was there too!

The one and only car I rode on both days during that weekend was R-10 #3184 (naturally). The scorecard for me inside riding the car was six round trips (between Brighton Beach and Kings Highway) on that Saturday, and six again on the Sunday. Between trips #4 and #5 on each day, I took a breather and lunch nearby the station.

And so it goes...

William: The last time that I rode in an R-10 prior to this trip was in 1988. It was car 3161 on the "C" train. The date was October 28, 1988.

I have added your name to the roll call for that day.

Avid: One wonder why they ever ran the el all the way up to 58th Street. The parks department was never going to let them run the el through the park.

I believe that the photo shows the turnout on Ninth Ave. where a train derailed on the curve going into 53rd St. with at least one car going off the structure to the street below. That's why there was a truck and a couple of wheel sets in the picture. That photo was taken before the express track was added after the Dual Contracts were signed.

Larry, the original Metropolitan 6th Ave el ran between 58th St and Rector St. That was their franchise when Dr Rufus Gilbert requested it. The following year, they built the 53rd St connector to the 9th Ave el. The Metropoltran went 50-50 with the NY Elevated with the extension from 66th St to 104th St. The lines merged to become the Manhattan Elevated railway, which built the rest of the line, north of 104th St.
