This is nice, but it would have been nicer if they could have also restored the E line all the way out to Arborway. That "temporary" suspension was finally made permanent, and this extension at the other end of the line is supposed to make up for it - but the folks in Jamaica Plains are still shafted...subfan |

The 4.7-mile extension will connect Cambridge, Somerville and Medford, placing 80% of Bostonians within a half-mile from a T stop. Currently only 20% live within that distance.How can a single 4.7-mile extension increase the number of Bostonians within half a mile of a T station from 20% to 80%? |

But if you consider some version of greater Boston, it still makes no sense that the Green Line extension improves 1/2-mile coverage from 20% to 80%. 20% seems way too low and 80% way too high. |

Yeah, the 80% number seems too high for either the literal Boston or some expanded version of Boston. And similarly the 20% number seems too low unless you talk about the whole metro area (in which case, of course, one little Green Line extension doesn't make much difference at all). |

The numbers have been "cooked" to make the extension sound more significant than it is. In other words, the particular version of Greater Boston that's been selected is one that's concentrated around the new line in East Cambridge and in Somerville, and so naturally the line radically increases the proportion of those people served.If you just look at the Boston SMSA, as defined by the Census Bureau, the numbers are nothing like the 20/80 cited here. |
