The work train stuck in 60th street tunnel again |
|
Posted by Seabeach53 on Wed Apr 21 08:29:26 2021 Good morningI know this has been posted before, but again the work train was stuck in the tunnel. This is a rather frequent occurrence during the morning rush. Why? |

Aren't the dimensions of BMT tunnels a bit narrower than IND tunnels, by about 3 or so inches? I saw in old Electric Railway Journals that on river crossings, they had to shave 1/16" off the distance between the track gauge and the third rail center (i.e. 27.5" rather than 27.5625"). The IND was a bit more generous on their river crossings. |

From what I saw in a PSC report from circa 1915 the BMT’s tunnels and other dual contracts infrastructure was built to accommodate the LIRR commuter coaches that were even a bit larger than IND cars and some of the first dual contract subways were even roomier than the IND which came later. |

I think from end to end the inner diameter on the BMT tunnels was 15' 6" (7' 9" radius), vs. 15' 9" (7' 10˝" radius) for the IND. I was wondering if that factor was why a work train would get stuck in the 60th Street tunnel. The steel construction of subway tunnels, that held. |

Sounds like Dual Contracts, if you're talking about tubes which on BMT river crossings was 15' 6" diameter, vs. 15' 9" on IND river tubes. |

Some of the older work equipment was made specifically for the IND or BMT before the work train divisions were consolidated. |
