Re: [PHOTO] Mystery Photo - AB # 2644

Although the timetables called for 2 trains of 8 steels to be run on the 14 St Line, there were usually enough Multi units available so those intervals were made with 3 Multi units lashed together which the employees along the line referred to as “Queen Marys” no doubt a reference to the ocean liner which has 3 funnels instead of the 2 that most ships had. They had to be careful with how the Multis were distributed on the line because while they could be used anywhere on the 14 St Line only Multis were allowed on 14/Fulton due to weigh restrictions. ON most BMT lines, the rule was that special services were supposed to run their full complement of trains and that if one of them went BO on the stand, a "regular” train would be used for the special and the headway on the regular service adjusted. For example if a Brighton/Nassau (bankers special) went BO, the signs would be changed on a regular Brighton Exp and that train used for the special service. On the 14/Fulton if a Multi went BO at 14/8, and the only other train available was a steel, the headway on the Fulton Sts had to be adjusted since a steel couldn’t tun to Lefferts.

That's what I mean. The line is packed at all hours. Running 9 car trains should have been a no-brainer, except the extra room on the platforms was probably long ago taken over by dumpsters, storage, and whatever.

But no rich contracts to be let. Just move their shit on the platforms aside, maybe minor platform extension, like 20', due to doors nearer to the ends than on a Stanadrd.

The problem with trying to run 9 car trains on the 14 St line is that the current NTTs are allotted in such a way that 5 car units would have to be transferred from lines like the A and The Qns Blvd line that need them.

It's a created problem. They could have planned for that when they ordered them, like 6 and 5 car R188's, or had the R179 order accomplish that.

The R-188s were just a modification to the R-142s with an add on of singles. The same thing could be accomplished with the 4 car units of the R-143s, 160s or 179s if there is any money to do so.

Or snag some of the R110B's, still serviceable, make them into "singles" or "pairs" to replace a Pair or a singles of R160's or r143's.

These modified sets, for peak rush hour service only to increase peak volume.

I believe there were eight of the original nine R110B's left.

With the current low numbers of riders, perhaps a set of R143's could be used/tested with R110b's on the Rockaway Park shuttle?

I don't think they want unique cars with their own spare parts stream and unique car length.

That is why I'd relegate them to Rock park shuttle or "RUSH Service Only"
