RIP John & Sue

Posted by kp5308 on Sat Feb 27 10:57:37 2021

Pictured below at Newark DE are John and Sue Funk, long time railroad and racing friends that are sadly no longer with us. John retired from Reading/Conrail in 1996 with 41 years of service and passed away suddenly on August 15th of 2020 at age 85. The couple never had children and no family in the Reading PA area so a few of us attempted to help Sue and the 3 cats out with what turned out to be a very difficult transition. Unfortunately Sue passed yesterday. I'm really going to miss those two. So sad :(

John & Sue Funk

John was big on organizing private car charters for many years. This is a group shot at Houston on a 6 day trip with Northern Sky that Karen & I rode on in 2013. John is in the red shirt & Sue is in blue:

Thanks Larry...they did a lot of travelling, had many friends and lived full lives. I felt really honored when it was discovered that in his will John named me (along with 2 others) as custodians of his huge and well organized slide collection. We are in the process of cataloging the contents and I may be posting some of his images from time to time. As of now we are up to approximately 30,000 railroad related images. They had a movie screen suspended from the ceiling in the living room and the slide projector was never put away. He loved to tell people that they visited every continent!

TY Bill....the Sue story was particularly tragic but not uncommon when dealing with losing a lifetime partner. At the end we think she just gave up.

KP: You friend was foresighted as well . I have known of too many railfans that have taken their knowledge to the grave. Very often they died without family and their homes were pilfered. John seems to have anticipated that. He seems to have left behind a massive legacy of railfan material. I now that cataloging his collection is a sad job but its one worth doing.

We did our part as best we could. Much remains but with the passing of Sue the rest is out of our hands. There is a massive HO layout in the basement that we ran from time to time but we made no attempt to do anything with inventory of the rolling stock. That was going to be next on the agenda.

That's an honor and a privilege you've been given. I also have no children and no siblings. I worry about what will happen to my possessions when my wife and I are both gone.

John has been gone 6 months and I still can't believe it. I am in a similar sutuation to yours and sometimes wonder what will happen but I must ask questions now that I'm (somewhat) responsible for this historical information. For instance John photographed a LOT of major construction projects of all types in the area back in the 50s & 60s.

My father in-law passed on in Jan. ,2003 and his spouse passed on , April, 2003. Previous to this, my wife, (their daughter), passed on in Oct, 2002. Bad times for me.

You need to start working on a plan now. I am facing the same likelihood and I am getting my plans in place. Recently I have bee recording the stories behind a lot of my older photo sets on Youtube live streams. Captures a lot of the context and fun anecdotes.

Reading Tech has recordings of countless former Reading employees and non railroad types like industry traffic managers, vendors and many others that had some contact with the carrier. I know John was a part of that project so he has to be in there. He was quite the story teller.

My condolences to you as well. From what you've written they were really good people, who enjoyed railfanning together with others and helping others out whenever someone needed it.
Thank you for including photos of them.
