Staten Island, New York
Richmond Railways

The Silver Lake (Victory Boulevard) streetcar line is converted to bus operation. The final run was made by car 300. The last outbound trip turned back two blocks short of the terminal due to a leaning trolley pole. It arrived back at the ferry terminal at 1:15 AM. This was the last streetcar line to run on Staten Island.

Tuscarora Almanac - January 26, 2005 - The Book of Wrecks (West Coast Division)

This article was written by Mr.Peter Erhlich (Milantram)

Los Angeles, California
Metrolink

On this date in 2005, Metrolink--the Los Angeles-area commuter rail agency--had one of its worst accidents in its young history (Metrolink began commuter train service in 1992.). This happened in Glendale, on the joint Ventura/Santa Clarita line, tracks of which were also used by Amtrak and Union Pacific.

Eleven people were killed (including an off-duty sheriff's deputy and a train conductor) and over 100 people were injured, about 40 seriously on January 26, 2005, when a Metrolink passenger train collided with a vehicle parked on the tracks, then jackknifed and struck a stationary freight locomotive and a Metrolink train moving in the opposite direction.

The man who parked the vehicle on the tracks--apparently deliberately--was Juan Manuel Alvarez. He was apprehended and charged with 11 counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, including murder by train wrecking.

On June 26, 2008, Alvarez was convicted on the 11 murder counts and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Illinois Railway Museum now has one of the two Electroliners, restored to its original paint scheme. They were offered the other one later, but declined.

I wonder if the Metrolink accident was the inspiration for an episode of “Law and Order” involving a Metro nrth commuter train and a car on the tracks under similar circumstances.

I've seen the one at IRM, but it hasn't seen much running time.
