PHOTOS: Heat Up The Hog

Posted by kp5308 on Mon Jan 11 21:19:50 2021

On Sunday Reading and Northern "T-Hog" #2102 got a fire going in the firebox 5 years and 1 day after the restoration on the ex-RDG 4-8-4 began. Much work remains but alot has been done to get to this point. Hard to believe the genesis of this was a 2-8-0:
RBMN 2102

The 27x32 cylinders are about halfway done and the Walschaert valve gear has been inspected, repaired as needed and cleaned but not installed. The trough and pipe in front of the smokebox is the Worthington SA open type feedwater heater:

The 70" Boxpok drivers had all new or remanufactured parts (including driver tires) done by Strasburg forces. Note the fully rebuilt reverser complete with linkage and fully rehabbed mounting brackets & hardware:

Rebuilt Delta trailing truck is ready for paint:

The booster machinery is pretty much inaccessible for work by the RBMN but an attempt will be made to operate it:

Roughly the bottom half of the firebox was replaced with new steel. I don't know the specifics of what was done but I do know that this was the biggest mess on the engine. IIRC the last trip for #2102 was in 1991 because the of the firebox deterioration. Also IIRC the engine ran out of flue time in 1995 but was out of service years before that:

Yes Slim, it is warming up:

The guy wearing the black cap personally owns the locomotive. Andy Muller Jr. bought the engine in 1986 from Rails Diversified for $60,000 in fully working order when it was still in Reading PA after running 4 "Rambles" sponsored by the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society. I wonder if the Reading & Northern is billing him:

The lit headlight made for some nostalgic shots of the T1 "look". Lots of parts are missing but how friggin' great does this look:

That make three steam locomotive restorations in as many years.

Union Pacific's restoration of Big Boy 4014.

Western Maryland Scenic's restoration of Chesapeake and Ohio 2-6-6-2 1309.

She was taken out on some test runs on the shop leads in Ridgeley, West Virginia just after the first of the year.

That's good to see. Used to be a lot of great steam trips around here, what with Andy Muller's engines, Steamtown, and visits by 765, 614, and 261.

I REALLY want to see & photograph that #1309. I've never witnessed a true Mallet in steam.

Unlike Big Boy or the Southern Pacific cab forwards the Chesapeake and Ohio 2-6-6-2 1309 is a compound engine.

In an interview with Trains Magazine, Muller said the maiden voyage would be on the NRFF when the work is completed

Not all articulated steam locomotives are Mallet's, but all Mallet are articulated locomotives with compound engines.
