PHOTOS: 10 years ago Amtrak leased trains

Posted by chuchubob on Sun Nov 29 13:16:46 2020

Amtrak used to lease MARC and NJ Transit trains on Thanksgiving Sunday to augment their limited supply of equipment. Photos from November 28, 2010, at SEPTA's Tacony station:

Excellent pics! That third shot has me wondering again, why SEPTA didn't just opt for an add-on to the Arrow III spec, instead of doing Silverliner IVs. They're essentially Arrows without the bathrooms...just sayin'...

Very nice shots. I see that they had to add an additional car to the SW Chief this weekend. A good sign.

Great shots! Did Amtrak engineers operate the Arrow units or was it an NJT engineer with an Amtrak pilot in the cab?

Silverliner IV is more like the Arrow II than III IIRC.

And IMHO, NJT got rid of their Arrow IIs prematurely; their average age was 23, and they were abused.

Some Amtrak engineers were qualified on the Arrows. Hardly any were on any sort of NJT ALP. That is why Amtrak leased Arrows.

Additionally the Arrows were the cheapest train set to lease and had more luggage space to boot. IIRC they had a full Amtrak crew.

That was a real good day. It was also the last time I shot film :)

Only time IIRC that Amtrak used the ALP-46 was on the last runs of the Clockers, fifteen years ago.

A friend of mine with be taking the SW Chief on Dec 18th, 2020. Chicago to Flagstaff, AZ.
I have been watching it every day for a while and it very rarely gets to Flagstaff on time. Either it's freight interference or mechanical problems.

I don't know how they crewed that.
The Clockers were totally subsidized by NJT.
