[PHOTOS] LIRR Alco "FA" Cabs
Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sat Nov 14 11:47:34 2020 It's been a while, so what the heck. #600 - Ex-PC #1302 < PC #1102 < nee NYC FA-2 #1102 looking freshly painted at Dunton. (August 1979) #603 - Ex LN #315 in Mineola. This scene is changing, get your shots now. (February 1980) #605 - Ex LN #310 in frigid Glen Cove. Brrrrrrr !(February 1984) #605 on the right. Can't make out the one on the left. A soon to be changed Mineola. BTW, the "Nassau" sign on Nassau tower was removed. The end I fear is near. (April 1990) #606 - Ex LN #321 in Brentwood. Some time later, this cab unit derailed and landed on it's side. It was scrapped.(April 1987) #608 - Ex WM #304 in Farmingdale. (January 1988) #608 again in Patchogue with the leaning tower (PD) of Patchogue. (July 1985) #610 - Ex WM #302 - the way Ronkonkoma used to look. (August 1980) #613 - Ex BN #4120 < SPS #866 #866A-1 in Oyster Bay. The station building will be the new home of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum. (March 1992) While #613 was at the station I went to Mill Neck and caught it on this trestle shot. (March 1992) #615 -Ex- BN #4116 < SPS #864-#864A-1 < GN #442A in a fantrip under NHRR catenary by SONO. (October 27, 1990) #617 - Ex PC #1333 < NH #0428 between Republic and Pinelawn. (January 1985) #617 again east of Wyandanch station in the single track days. (January 1988) Here's what the controls of an ALCO FA cab look like. The engine on the left in the 4th photo, at Mineola and Nassau tower, is (I think) #619, the former Milwaukee F9A.

I recall being on once when the Pusher power unit crapped out, The FA cut out the lights and heat and tried to supply the power but it too crapped out just before making it to Jamaica.

The FA's had no traction motors. Some of the MP15's could switch back and forth, and #169 was power-pack only, with a "P" over the number, which some interpreted as an un-approved FRA renumbering.

The power packs lacked traction motors for their entire LIRR service.
