[PHOTOS] LIRR Alco "FA" Cabs

It's been a while, so what the heck.
#600 - Ex-PC #1302 < PC #1102 < nee NYC FA-2 #1102 looking freshly painted at Dunton. (August 1979)

#603 - Ex LN #315 in Mineola. This scene is changing, get your shots now. (February 1980)

#605 - Ex LN #310 in frigid Glen Cove. Brrrrrrr !(February 1984)

#605 on the right. Can't make out the one on the left. A soon to be changed Mineola.
BTW, the "Nassau" sign on Nassau tower was removed. The end I fear is near. (April 1990)

#606 - Ex LN #321 in Brentwood. Some time later, this cab unit derailed and landed on it's side. It was scrapped.(April 1987)

#608 - Ex WM #304 in Farmingdale. (January 1988)

#613 - Ex BN #4120 < SPS #866 #866A-1 in Oyster Bay. The station building will be the new home of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum. (March 1992)

While #613 was at the station I went to Mill Neck and caught it on this trestle shot. (March 1992)

Excellent! I got cold looking at the photo at Glen Cove!

The engine on the left in the 4th photo, at Mineola and Nassau tower, is (I think) #619, the former Milwaukee F9A.

The engine on the left in the 4th photo, at Mineola and Nassau tower, is (I think) #619, the former Milwaukee F9A.

Thanks, it's hard to tell if it's an ALCO or EMD.

The paint scheme around the nose was different between the Alco's and the EMD's.

Great photos!

By the time you took the photos, were they already just cab cars? Kind of sad when they disabled the engines - kind of like lobotomizing them.

By the time you took the photos, were they already just cab cars?

Thank you.

They were already control cabs when they were on the LIRR. They never ran on their own power pulling trains.

Their first few years, they ran on the east end of trains.

Yeah, although they could if necessary. I recall being on once when the Pusher power unit crapped out, The FA cut out the lights and heat and tried to supply the power but it too crapped out just before making it to Jamaica.

just wondering as traction motors were removed when changed to cab/power units . the MP15ac's had a choice switch but FA's did not.

That's impossible. The FA's had no traction motors.

Some of the MP15's could switch back and forth, and #169 was power-pack only, with a "P" over the number, which some interpreted as an un-approved FRA renumbering.

That is true but they were being pushed by the locomotive on the west end.

This was in the late '70's, perhaps "76" or '77"

FA power packs started arriving in 1971, the first 6 with 44 2800-series T-72 coaches. The power packs lacked traction motors for their entire LIRR service.

I don't know when MP15's started to be used as power packs, although they did not arrive from EMD until 1975 or 1976. (I was away at college then)
