I recall my father saying that before the TWU appeared, they worked 10 hour shifts, six days a week. The pay was never great but it was a secure job once the city took over, and that meant a lot to people who came of age in the Depression.. |

According to one of the IRT old timers I worked with, the “full”work week was 7 days, but since there were fewer Sunday runs than the other 6 days, many employees were off Sundays and would get Sunday work once or twice a month on a rotating basis in seniority order. It’s odd to think that back then you needed seniority to work on Sunday when now you need seniority to get it off. |

Then there were scores of Irish priests who wound up here. Except for our church in South Bend, every other parish I've been a part of had either an Irish pastor or Irish vicar. |
