Re: The IRT pre-unification

I recall my father saying that before the TWU appeared, they worked 10 hour shifts, six days a week. The pay was never great but it was a secure job once the city took over, and that meant a lot to people who came of age in the Depression..

According to one of the IRT old timers I worked with, the “full”work week was 7 days, but since there were fewer Sunday runs than the other 6 days, many employees were off Sundays and would get Sunday work once or twice a month on a rotating basis in seniority order. It’s odd to think that back then you needed seniority to work on Sunday when now you need seniority to get it off.

And it bothers me that you see immigrants as something we "imported". Products are imported. People come on their own initiative. People are not products.

I am not Irish, but I like and respect the Irish heritage. Both here and in Ireland.

Then there were scores of Irish priests who wound up here. Except for our church in South Bend, every other parish I've been a part of had either an Irish pastor or Irish vicar.
