SEPTA Mid-Winter Trip XX - COVID Edition

Posted by Jersey Mike on Thu Oct 22 13:18:07 2020

I'm not about to let a little pandemic break my XX year streak of hosting SEPA Mid-Winter Trips and I am sure that many of you will have surprisingly free holiday schedules either working from home or not seeing friends and family.

While details are still being finalized it is quite obvious that a traditional MWT spent actually riding transit vehicles is not going to work. Even if riding transit is of only modest risk, the group would be spread out to the point that conversation and photos would be difficult.

Therefore, MWT XX will consist of a special WALKING TOUR of rail sights in the Center and University City districts of Philadelphia. The general concept is to begin at the generally ghost town WEST concourse of the Market East station and then walk up to the abandoned Reading Viaduct, then along the route of the City Branch to the Art Museum circle. From there we would head along the old B&O route to JFK on the Schuylkill river path then up and over the JFK Boulevard bridge to 30th St for photos from the parking deck and lunch. After lunch the tour would continue with the southern approach to 30th St station, University City SEPTA station and ARSENAL interlocking before returning via the South St Bridge and the southern part of the River Walk that runs next to the CSX Philly sub.

Distance will be about 6-7 miles over flat terrain. Date is likely Monday Dec 28th, although I might set the exact date closer to the event when the weather conditions are better known.

I know I am likely to not get a lot of people out for this, but I think it's important to get out and do COVID safe activities such as a 6-7 mile urban hike xD

I'll post a Favebook event in the near future. I'd expect that people will still need to use transit to get to Market East. I might delay the start time to completely avoid the peak periods such as they are.

This is racist. The holiday season ended last week. Not everyone is interested in the christosupremcy as Smaz used to call it.

Beginning with the first trip, the date has been set in the last week of December because SEPTA management employees are on vacation and the odds of harassment are minimized.
This will be the first Mid-Winter Trip that I'll miss.

City Branch update: steel girder replacement of the 15th St. crossing of the cut & Terminal Commerce Building yard is presently taking place. From time to time Callowhill St. is completely closed in the area to position cranes & concrete trucks. You may want to look into what is involved in the project and adjust accordingly. I was there last week in the morning & it was a nightmare to even walk around.

Will do, the route is a rough outline as I anticipate the need for slight detours for photos.

re: the odds of harassment are minimized

Is SEPTA not overly railfan friendly or accepting?

I didn't have any issues while filming 1500 feet of 16mm over there a few years ago. Actually, they few that came to check things out found it interesting...
