Renovating the huge Chambers St station would involve extensive waterproofing of those extensive walls, floors, and who-knows-what.

Those pillars look pretty spindly - until you realize they're also supporting the turnout for the M train!

Actually those aren't the pillars that support the turnout from Bway. Those pillars on on the other side of the Bway el structure.

I think you mean both photos show the east side of the Myrtle el structure between Broadway and the connection from the Broadway el.
