Ten hours at Church Avenue Station

Posted by Jeff Rosen on Thu Oct 15 07:23:45 2020

Most posters here know I have been working as a background extra since retiring (at least until covid19 stopped all production in March) Well tomorrow is the debut of a new show on Netflix called Grand Army, about high school students in Brooklyn. I just saw the trailer and there I am in the hat holding a coffee cup behind the cop. It was a split second in the trailer, hopefully on the show it will be longer. I held that cup in that station about 10 hrs through about 40 retakes!! Although it was the beginning of September and hot the scene was Valentines Day so we were sweating in heavy winter clothes the whole day. I also did another job that day on a train on the express track.

Actually I've done a lot of background jobs. Up until covid I was working about twice a week. This was just my only subway scene. Although this one may count as the FBI agents, the guy & the girl, are chasing the hooded perp onto the subway on the show FBI: Most Wanted. I'm the one on my phone at the food truck!! (Brook Av Station in the Bronx)

Church Avenue seems to be a recently popular place for shooting subway scenes. Most of the subway scenes in Mr. Robot were filmed there.

Do you get to eat at the nice sidewalk commissaries they set up?

Sarge, you're such a stud....

Is that an off-duty cop working as an extra or an actor in uniform?

It's a fairly flexible location. Large intact mezzanine, two unused tracks, and an interlocking in case anything needs to be repositioned.

Mr. Robot filmed quite a bit on the streets in Kensington as well - probably made sense to keep it all in the same area.

I have a good friend who is a cop who has had done work as an extra, usually playing a cop. He's done quite a few and some had speaking roles. Another good friend who is a teacher also does extra work. No speaking roles for him yet.

There are countless movie and TV scenes shot here and at 7 Av and on trains traveling between the two.

A scene for John Wick: Chapter 2 starring Keanu Reeves was also filmed at the Church Avenue mezzanine. It’s the part of that movie where the character tells a homeless man that he wants to see the Bowery King after dropping a coin in and that he needs help from him.

They almost always have indoor buffets for the extras and crew. At least until covid. I doubt they're going to have buffets now. But they had everything, salad, all kinds of meats including steaks, all kinds of vegetables, and desserts. The outdoor things you mentioned are usually coffee and snacks and if early in the morning breakfast. For this production our buffet lunch was in an elementary school (it was a Sunday) a block away where our holding was. The snacks were actually set up in the station!!

Besides the mezzanine scene pictured I did one scene on either an R-46 or an R-68 (I get them confused). The scene was the train pulling in and an actress getting off. They did about 10 retakes so the train kept going in and out of the station, far enough into the tunnel so it wouldn't be seen. After the girl gets out and the door closed, they'd yell cut and the door would open so the girl could get back it for the next take!!

No, he wasn't a real cop. He wasn't even an extra as he was an actor with a speaking role. You'll see that tomorrow if you watch it on Netflix, episode two. BTW, there were two real cops in the scene as they had canine police dogs in the scene but that's unusual.

By the way, besides the buffets and "sidewalk commissaries that you mentioned sometimes one can eat on set in the scene as in these pictures I took off my TV or laptop. You do have to eat slow so it can last through all the retakes. (In the first one the actress with her back to the camera is Anna Kendrick)

Here are two videos with me on it I shot from the show Grand Army from my laptop. The first one you can easily make me out in the hat holding the coffee cap in the station. In the 2nd one I'm very blurry so you'll have to take my word for the fact that's me sitting at the first window in the hat to the right of the door the actress gets out of:
