Tuscarora Almanac for September 18

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Fri Sep 18 13:45:40 2020

Tuscarora Almanac – September 18, 1952 – The Book of Wrecks
Cornwall, New York
New York, Ontario & Western Railway

The big coal dock at Cornwall is destroyed. A fire had broken out aboard a Liberian freighter and the vessel docked there in order to put out the blaze. The fire was extinguished but the dock itself burnt to the ground. It was not rebuilt as coal loadings for the O&W had significantly declined.

My Dad's family is from Middletown, NY. We'd cross the tracks in our car, by the 1950s only used for freight, I think, as we drove up the hill to Highland Avenue, to the family house where my Dad grew up.
