How well , if at all, do Tunnel Boring machines work in a sandy environment.Would they do better then "Cut and Cover? Tunnel boring machines are designed for a verity of different soil conditions. There are 3 basic types, Hard rock, pressure balanced and non pressure balanced. Pressure balanced is typically used for tunnels below sea level or through sedimentary soils below the water table. The types can be combined for boring through a range of rock types and or sedimentary soils, I had the privilege of seeing the business end of hard rock boring machine similar to the one in your picture at the bottom of the shaft on the north end of the then future Van Ness Metrorail station. I saw the rest of the same machine on a previous occasion when it was between the Cleveland Park and Woodley Park - Zoo stations. John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |
