"The CSX Transportation engineer whose train ran through a stop signal and sideswiped an oncoming train near Carey, Ohio, last year had a blood alcohol level five times the legal limit, and also had traces of marijuana in his system at the time of the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board said today."

LEGALIZE IT. It's harmless they tell me!

Well, alcohol is legal if used in moderation. Any substance when used at inappropriate times and under inappropriate circumstances can be harmful and dangerous. Even if weed were to become legalized, that still wouldn’t allow a safety sensitive employee to indulge before going to work.

the year 63, the train MILW RD #19. On my way back to college. Greeted the uniformed crew as Istowed my grip in a coach; then headed for the baggage carwhere anotherguy I regularly saw when meeting the train at the station several blocks from my dorm. Got invited to hang out in the car for the ride from Chicago. We were barely moving through the north throat of Union Station when he took a pint o Hennessey out of his briefcase. I declined but had a couple of gulps.

A different evening, when I met the train, one of the regulars was missing. Turned out he as so loaded that they had put him to sleep in a roomette and planned to wae him just before their change out station.
FWIW, this train was staffed from Marion Iowa--they worked 2 divisions to Chicago early AM, laid over (drinking, napping, whatever) evening departure from Chicago, 2 days off, rinse repeat.

since 1933 the alcohol has been legal. Rule G prohibits being under the influence of either legal or illegal drugs while on duty. Being stoned on your night off while at a concert is no different from being tipsy at the same concert.

Quite the cherry-pick there.

"It was unclear what effect, if any, the inactive traces of marijuana had on the engineer on the day of the collision, the NTSB said."
