Re: Why would an R-16 LL be in Fresh Pond Yard?

I heard that an R-10 got mixed in with an R-12/14 consist with the same results.

I have heard conflicting stories but it was definitely a BMT/IND car.

The R12s had one extra roof vent so a competent yardmaster at Concourse yard might have noticed the difference between an R10 and an R12 but the R16 roof looks the same as everything else if you can't read the car numbers due to cars layed up in front of his view. The R10s had their number tags placed high up and the R12s had them lower. Either way the switchmen screwed up and the yardmaster didn't do his job and walk the yard or monitor the drill when he received the cars from 207. The car in question was an R10 that tore up northbound bedford park.

I guess several long unpaid vacations were taken shortly afterwards.

Actually, the R-16 roof was slightly different from the other SMEEs of the era. The roof vents were about half the size of the roof vents on the R-17s and up so consequentially there were more of them.

R16 Vents appeared larger than the other SMEE equipment.

I really didn't like those cars other than the seat arrangement.
Like the R10,the forward facing seats made direction of travel easier to distinguish.

They were actually SMALLER and if you compare a photo of an R-16 and an R-17 you will see the difference.
