Temporary Inspection Shed on Pelham Line |
|
Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Wed Jul 8 11:30:37 2020 I have been compiling an index of all my IRT information and I came across the following which might be of interest to the Bronx fans. The Pelham Line construction reached Hunts Point Avenue on January 8, 1919 and East 177th Street on May 30, 1920. Later in 1920 trains finally reached Pelham Bay. Prior to the opening of the Pelham (later Westchester Sq) Yard there was a temporary inspection shed located just north of the portal between Hunts Point and Whitlock Av. This was a single track lead to the west leading to a small three track yard. Two of the tracks were located inside the shed. The yard was located between East 165th Street and Lowell Street. It was in use until 1927. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Aerial Map showing four-car train [Re: Temporary Inspection Shed on Pelham Line] |

I remembered that there is a 1924 aerial map online here and saw that the switch off the line and the siding can be seen. Even better, a four car train is on it!This is the site of the former switch off the main line: It seems likely that the inspection shed and yard tracks were located underneath the elevated structure here: |

My family lived on Longfellow Avenue one block west of Whitlock Ave. between Aldus and 165th just south of where that temporary yard was. I had a good look out the back window at solid consists of new R17 cars going in and out of the tunnel leading to Hunts Point Ave. There were also many trains passing the abandoned NYW&B station at Westchester Ave. and the old concrete plant which is now a city park. We moved to Flushing, Queens in October 1961. |

I like the famous picture of the Flushing line structure along Queens Blvd. with almost nothing around it. This was only a couple of miles into Queens! Of course it didn't stay that way for long once the subway opened. |
