PHOTOS: RBMN F Units

Posted by kp5308 on Sat Jul 4 11:18:40 2020

Reading & Northern is running an invitation only North Reading/Jim Thorpe/Pittston/North Reading (PA) 3 day trip this weekend. I chased for a few hours yesterday. North Reading departure:

At the beginning of the week an SD40-2 & GP39RN derailed here and made a mess of the switches & track. Duane & the Track Department did a good job getting the whole plant back in order:

The siding at Port Clinton has been extended about a mile west but has not been placed in service:

Speed was limited to 40 due to the wooden underbody of business car #1 Black Diamond. The sun was still hiding for the field view at Miller's Crossing:

The New Ringgold shot was no better:

South of Tamaqua the sun was shining bright:

Tamaqua traffic was terrible so my last shot was along Lake Hauto near Nesquehoning. The ex-Jersey Central portion of this route REALLY needs ties, rail & surfacing:

See ya Andy!

There is something ‘just right’ about those locomotives, they look exactly as a diesel loco should.

They’re also aerodynamic, much better than the platypus/toenail stuff they’re making us pay for now. The front is close to parabolic (perfect aero front), with curved windshield glass and a tapered trailing car the shape would be good for 180 mph.

real nice units but going from NS inspection train to RBMN is still equal to a race horse now giving horsie rides to general public.
Just sad how they got demoted

I think Steve did a nice job adapting the NS scheme. An auto body guy he knows came down to the Port Clinton shop and really hit a home run blending it all in.

Thanks... I'm going to try and shoot them coming back tomorrow but I don't know if I can fit it into my schedule.

The recent locomotives are probably even more aerodynamic. One has also remember that compared to many locomotives today, they were underpowered especially if they were geared for 100+ mph. If they had more powerful engines, then they would probably be capable of even better performance!

Not only that but the front end design makes them better in snow than their contemporaries the GP7/9/18 etc.
