June 27, 2010, service cuts.

Posted by Chicago44 on Sat Jun 27 20:10:12 2020

It was 10 years ago on June 27, 2010 there were service cuts, however, one of the cuts which was the for the M train in Southern Brooklyn to be eliminated & rerouted it to replace the V train on 6th Av & to restore the old 6th Av/Broadway-Brooklyn service for the first time since August 1976 was a big improvement for Northern Brooklyn, Ridgewood & Middle Village, Queens riders.

Ridership has increased along this segment of the M train, it has lasted longer that the old K train did prior to elimination in August 1976, gives riders a one direct ride to Midtown Manhattan & reduces the overcrowding on the nearby L train as well as riders on the L riders won't have to transfer at the overcrowded 6 Av, Union Sq & 8 Av stations to reach Midtown & reduces the overcrowding at Delancey & Essex St to the F train.

I hope one day that the W train will be extended into Brooklyn.

That was a smart move. It basically combined two routes that entered Manhattan from opposite directions and ended there.

Though this tidbit belongs in the BusChat section, these 2010 cuts also made the M1 bus, on its southbound route path, a carbon copy of the old FACO Division Route 1 between 135th and 8th Streets. This is notable because: a) the M1 as we know it today was 100% derived from the old NYCO Fourth and Madison Avenues route that in turn was descended from the city's first streetcar route which was inaugurated way back in 1832, and b) from 1966 until the cutbacks, the M1's transitioned to Madison from 39th Street and Park Avenue, and from Fifth Avenue at 40th Street to Park, its SB path simply shifted one block west back then. After the changes, M1's NB transition point to Madison was shifted to 25th and Park Avenue South. No doubt what was descended from Fifth Avenue Coach Lines didn't speak up to object to this rerouting, given how in 1962 they claimed "perpetual franchise" on their #1 route.

Ridership is up and property values too.

Why extend the W to Brooklyn?

To replace what 6th Avenue and Queens Blvd stole. A second local on 4th Avenue and a second route between Lower Manhattan and south Brooklyn

An extension to 9 Ave would be sufficient in my opinion. Could make up in a way for the loss of service to Nassau St. Otherwise I don’t see anywhere else economically efficient for the W to go in Brooklyn.

Problem is the Brooklyn end does not have as much ridership.

The stations towards the north end of the line need the service.

If W goes to Brooklyn and gets delayed it affects the northern terminal more.

And as I remember, we had ONE person on this board who complained LOUDLY at the idea of combining the (M) with the (V), upset that HE was now going to have to deal with overcrowded (F) trains at 2nd Avenue as opposed to being able to get on an empty (V) train there. Not to mention at the time this move made sense and still does.

I’m sure similar issues were raised when the uptown Fs and BBs were extended to the south end and passengers on 6 Ave no longer could board nearly empty trains at places like 34/6.

The outfit is broke. There will be no new or extended services. Just hope they don't cut what we already have.
