PHOTOS: Then and Now |

Posted by kp5308 on Sat Mar 28 10:08:04 2020 For the past few years westbound NS 18N was a bit of an odd train, solid empty auto racks with typically just one locomotive for power. Two months ago I shot an AC44C6M on the point passing under the cantilever at Blandon:Recently 18N was abolished due to slow car sales and if necessary the empties are added to 34K. The monster train is pictured at the same location yesterday with 3 AC 6 axles up front: And a bunch of empty carriers on the tail: These are the freight symbols that I know of that have been cancelled on the Reading Line...32A 33K 242 243 18N 11J 15J The good news is I went back to work yesterday after 4 days off due to the change in our company's status. We are considered part of the supply chain supporting life-sustaining businesses. Thursday I shot ONE TRAIN (#294) in 4 hours, and the image was not a particularly good one: More often than not H44 from Reading to Allentown is just a locomotive move like this one. I suppose this counts as a "train" since it does carry a symbol so we'll say 2 trains in 4 hours: Between the virus closing businesses & the implementation of Precision Scheduled Railroading around here traffic has easily dropped off by half to about 20 trains a day. According to the Association of American Railroads the first 12 weeks of 2020 were not good ‘uns for the industry. U.S. railroads reported cumulative volume of 2,773,207 carloads, down 6.1 percent from the same point last year; and 2,948,362 intermodal units, down 8.1 percent from last year. Total combined U.S. traffic for the first 12 weeks of 2020 was 5,721,569 carloads and intermodal units, a decrease of 7.2 percent compared to last year. |
