PHOTOS: Wuhan Weekend

Posted by kp5308 on Mon Mar 23 10:51:32 2020

I read Salaam's post about going out to shoot this past weekend & it got me thinking...what if this PA Guvnah decides to not let us out AT ALL! Better grab the Sony! Grab the tripod! Gas up the Elantra! The sun is shining bright! No time to waste!
Saturday I worked on the A/C unit and ran some wiring on Reading Business Car #15 in the morning/afternoon. On my way home I stopped by a recently opened photo spot on the Reading Line near Blandon PA. Berkshire Excavating completed their new headquarters a few months back featuring a good sized parking lot and nice photo angles both for east & west bound traffic. I didn't see any saplings planted along the track so as of now this view looks like it will be around for us to enjoy. I wonder if the owner of the firm is a railfan:

Karen announced that she was going to watch a Hallmark movie at night so I grabbed the tripod and drove a few miles to North Reading for some time exposures:

Power sitting at Laureldale has become rather common lately. This area has pretty decent lighting so I tried my luck. This SD50 was repainted from the Lehigh Gorge Scenic blue scheme about 2 years ago:

The ex-CSX SD50s have LED step lighting which photographs much nicer than an incandescent lamp:

The Mertztown train station was scheduled to be open to the public on Sunday. The website had no update on a cancellation so I drove the 10 or so miles to find out. Karen decided to stay home. This is what I photographed on the way there & back:
Blandon:

Bowers:

South Park St. crossing in Topton. The odd buildings on the left were originally a part of William Tragus Supply, a coal, feed and building materials company with a private siding. It has been remodeled into a self storage business:

Lyons:

Unfortunately the open house was cancelled. The building was erected in 1875 and is pretty much intact inside. From Train Orders:
Mertztown Station on the NS Reading Line has officially been sold by Atlas Minerals & Chemicals Inc . (Atlas has owned the station since 1963) To the Lownswamp Township Historical Society.
The LSTHS plans to restore it and turn it into the Township's museum. The society purchased the station for $1.00. The Society will move the station to an off site location. Hopefully to the Topton end of the Allentown & Auburn Railroad. It must stay in Longswamp Township and the A&A travels about a 3rd of a mile in Longswamp Township. Atlas has given the society 5 years to get it off site.
:

We also had a friend of ours over for a visit & dinner on Sunday. I stopped by the NS Spring St. Yard office on the way and shot the 2 locals returning to the office. A pair of GP38-2s running light showed up first:

Immediately followed by a pair of GP40-2s pushing their train into the yard. The 3001 is an ex-Reading engine that the local train watchers keep an eye on:

When I dropped Pauly off afterwards I stopped by the yard again with the tripod. An SD70ACe with the headlight on dim is blocking the laid up local power:

After it leaves the Geeps I shot earlier are exposed for my last shot of the weekend:

Today is the first day of a forced vacation due to Gov. Wolf's declaration. I am very fortunate to have an employer that will be paying us for the next 2 weeks if it goes that long. The company is appealing our new designation as non essential.

My simple contribution to the get out & do some trainspotting idea before Gov Wolf locks us up with pandemic fighting "house arrest".
Pictured here is a oil tanker unit train enroute to Conway Yd out side of Pittsburgh. Shot here along the Ohio River in near Sewickley Pa.

Thanks. Weather is pretty shitty in these parts today so more trainspotting might have to wait. Off & on rain all day.
But it least it isin't snow!
