R46 Brighton AM rush

Posted by Lou from Brooklyn on Thu Feb 20 06:57:15 2020

So my B laid down at the Highway this morning so waited for next Bravo on the local and as we pulled out low and behold southbound was an R46 Quincy.
Sorry didn't catch the car numbers.

If it was going north I would have rode it even with the inconvenience of changing at Hearld Square. Soon all the real subway cars will be gone.

There are now just shy of 200 former Jamaica R-46 units; NOT including that s/b Quincy which was formerly a n/b Romeo to 96/2. That train goes light into CI Yd. and then is a put in for PM Romeo service; it's still a Jamaica barn train.

I guess Andy C has relaxed his "R160 Only" rule for 96/2!!!

He has no choice due to the CBTC installation on Qns Blvd requiring all NTTs to be transferred to Qns Blvd lines.

Or is it all R46's sent to CIY, which may not completely abolish R160's at CIY ?

I’ve seen several R46’s signed up with diamond Q. Is the diamond Q next to W or N so that it’s easier than dialing it to circle Q?

If the sign is older than 2001, it won't have a yellow circle Q, only a yellow diamond and an orange circle.

Yes, I got that. Truthfully, I think it's no big deal. Non-railfan riders are content with any car class that overall runs well and has good A/C.

Most non-railfan customers will see the electronic side signs on R46s and think the cars are newer than R68s.

Wood grain and formica walls (R46) Very 1970's.
Stainless walls (R68)

HGTV fans will think the R46 is "dated" and therefore older.

Well some NTTs will have to remain at CIYd since Fs and Rs are stored there and those cars will be needed for Qns Blvd service.

The NTTs have formica or some sort of synthetic walls and they actually more closely resemble the color scheme of the pre GOH R-32s through 42s which were even older than the 44s and 46s.

Some of the R68s don’t have a 96 St-2 Av reading, so I’m guessing a decision was made to place more of the 46s on the Q than originally planned.

And why don't all the 68s have a 96/2 reading?

Randyo asked “ And why don't all the 68s have a 96/2 reading? ”

even if they did, crews rarely change them to the proper reading. I have seen many R68 Q trains with Astoria as NB terminal rather than say 57/7 if they don’t have 96/2. Riders that don’t pay attention often freak out north of 57/7 when they realize it’s not a N/W.
