I've only stumbled onto a few photos from that long-ago fantrip. I hope more turn up.

Here's another photo, taken at Myrtle-Wyckoff, again presumably on the 7/4/1976 fantrip. From facebook.

So what's the deal with 75-footers on the BMT eastern?

I know there was a thread awhile back about moving them around the yard in East NY (Or something?) but that implied it was tricky. This looks pretty smooth.

Are the curves not too restrictive between the Williamsburg Bridge and Broadway Junction? If the other picture is from Myrtle Wyckoff I guess the curves just past Myrtle on the M are ok?
I thought I had been told there was a weight restriction or something..
Also aren't the platforms too short?

Please, help me understand..

Originally the issue was clearances on the Willamsburg Bridge and other parts of the eastern division. But now there are other sections of the system where 75-footers are prohibited.

I thought the issue wasn't that they couldn't negotiate the curves but that two trains couldn't pass each other while doing so. They would sideswipe each other. That would mean that a single set of R44/46/68 could run there but not two. And clearly from the photo they did.

Just my luck, I was in L. A. that day (in preparation for my move there at the end of the summer to attned USC). But I wouldn't have known about the fan trip anyway (no pubically-available internet back then).

Funny but on Bicentennial Day I was attending a barbecue at a friend's house in Canarsie. If only I had known..............

Another one. An R46 near Fresh Pond Road during the 7/4/1976 fantrip. I found this photo on the old subtalk years ago, then lost it. This image is from 'JBar387' on photobucket but I have no idea who the original photographer was.

Dan, I told Bob about it, he was to tell you about it 1 hour before, so you would have ample time.

He was on his way to get a case of beer, but he never came back!

it would be interesting to know exactly where that train went on it's trip.

I bet it would squeak a lot between Gramd and Graham.

yes, the "center excess" and the "end excess" would cause the train to hit other trains or structures.

ENY Yard would be a disaster.

Leaving Marcy Ave going to Manhattan trains make immediate right then left to approach. If two trains are making that turn at same time they could kiss each other.

I'll guess that it went on the Broadway Line then switched to the Canarsie Line at B'way Jct down to Rockaway Pky. & back. I've heard that the curves & tunnel clearances are too tight for 75 footers between 8th Ave & B'way Jct on the Canarsie Line.

It's a safe bet that all curves on the Three Stooges Division were designed around the BMT standards. Or was it the other way around?

July 4 was a Sunday in '76. I remember watching that flotilla in New York Harbor that day on TV.

Considering some sections (IE Crescent Street curve) predate the standards, I’m going to go the the later...

Crescent Street is one place the 75 foot long cars would have a problem.

If you take a good look at the J Line structure at Crescent St, you will see the original structure for the Jamaica bound tk. The curve was eased when steels started to be used because the original curve was too sharp.

R-46s did operate along the Myrtle, I have a photo of a MU lash up at Fresh Pond going down the hill to Metro.

I have never seen these photos of 46s at ENY. That puts to bed the legend that they were banned from the Eastern division....up to ENY.

Past ENY on the Jamaica el, I have doubts at Crescent/Fulton.

Seems to be all cab cars, no "B" cars. They wanted more brake compressors ?
