R-46s back on Brighton

Posted by italianguyinsi on Wed Feb 19 09:39:28 2020

For several days, I have seen at least two sets of 46s along with a set of CI 68s operating along the Q.

Have there been additional MU swap outs between CI Yd. and Jam?

Yep, I rode one on the Brighton (The Q line) a couple days ago. Rode one on SAS yesterday. Also seen the 68 set on the Q. I'm loving this swap, the subway hasn't been this exciting in years.

I wouldn't say additional swaps, it's just that at this point the R160/R46 swap has yielded more cars so that it is necessary for CIYD to assign an R46 to the Q. Of course for quite a few months now, it has been common for a Jamaica assigned R46 to do a southbound trip on the Q at the end of the AM rush as it was a changeover from the R at 96th St.

All R46's are in the process of leaving Jamaica Yard and being transferred to CIYD lines for CBTC along Queens Blvd. At this point the R is pretty much 50-50 with R46 and R160. It is odd to find an R46 on the F.

Yes; but more recently, there have been 2 - 3 sets in the late afternoons and evenings. A CI R-68 train also spotted.

As someone else said, as more and more NTT's head to Jamaica from CI, the more 46s head to CI from Jam.

A half trip from 96 to Stillwell.

A Jamaica set. Sometimes an R160 set assigned to Jamaica Yard, sometimes an R46 set assigned to Jamaica Yard.

Once Jamaica Yard is 100% R160, then obviously it will be that.

In the AM rush an R goes from 95 to 96/2 then it goes south as a Q. Then to CIYD for PM R service.

On Monday evening I boarded an R-68 on the southbound Q at Atlantic. The rollsigns had 57 St / 7 Av displayed as the north terminal. (BTW, the Saturday schedule on Presidents' Day was just barely adequate IME. That train—which I think arrived roughly on time, 9 minutes after the last one—was packed to the gills, with the conductor repeating "step all the way in" announcements and cycling the doors multiple times.)
