Bank of the Manhattan Company was founded in 1799 by Aaron Burr. He started the Manhattan Company with a charter to supply fresh water to NYC, but a loophole in the charter allowed him to provide banking services as well, which was his goal in order to compete with his rival Alexander Hamilton. The company merged with Chase Bank in 1955 to form Chase Manhattan, now JP Morgan Chase. |
